Beach Unlocking, Obstacle Course: Memorial Day Weekend In Ocean City

Summer is almost upon us, and many believe it begins with Memorial Day Weekend. For those heading down the shore to celebrate, there is no shortage of fun events for everyone.
May 27
Around 9 a.m., Ocean City Music Pier will begin the 2022 daily flag-raising ceremony, with the playing of the national anthem and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.,” according to the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce.
Ocean City officials at noon will turn a ceremonial wooden key and officially “unlock the ocean” for the summer season. This free event starts Memorial Day Weekend and reigning Miss New Jersey Alyssa Sullivan will sing the national anthem.
Then, Ocean City will host the “Business Persons Plunge,” where fully-clothed representatives of Ocean City businesses and organizations will march into the ocean wearing business suits and holding briefcases as an Ocean City High School band plays “Pomp and Circumstance.”

May 28
The daily flag raising ceremony will honor Vietnam veterans from Philadelphia’s Father Judge High School. Read More: Ocean City Flag Raising To Honor Vietnam Veterans
Athletes can compete in the Memorial Beach Challenge, a two-mile obstacle course, on much of the beach between Fifth Street and 15th Street. Proceeds support 31Heroes, an organization that helps service members, veterans and their families. The race also includes a Kids Fun Run and Memorial Paddle Out. It starts at 8 a.m. near Music Pier. May 30
The Memorial Day Service will be held at Veterans Memorial Park, 500 block of Wesley Avenue, starting at 11 a.m. Keynote speakers will be local VFW Post Commander Mike Morrissey and American Legion Commander Bob Marzulli.
At 3 p.m., the National Moment of Remembrance will be held. Americans are asked to pause for one minute. Greg Murphy of Buglers Across America will play Taps from the Ocean City Music Pier, which will be broadcast on the public boardwalk address system.
