Veronica Flesher, Patch Staff

Interested in being a lifeguard? The Ocean City Beach Patrol is hosting tryouts for the summer season on June 1.

Tryouts are for candidates who are 16 or older, or are 15 but will turn 16 before July 15, according to the OCBP. Those under 16 are ineligible to begin work as a lifeguard before their 16th birthday.

Registration for the tryout starts at 8 a.m. at the 18th Street Beach, with the competition starting at 9 a.m.

The standard competitive test includes a 500-meter ocean swim, a 500-meter ocean paddleboard, a one-half-mile beach run, a 500-meter erg and a surf dash. All candidates also must complete an interview. Candidates must complete a physical examination before the tryout. You can find the physical form here.

If you want to try out, complete this contact info sheet to receive updates and information about the June 2024 OCBP lifeguard test.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol will also be hiring seasonal EMTs for 2024. EMTs respond to a variety of medical calls and other public service assignments. The OCBP EMS Division is looking for EMTs who can command medical scenes, work side-by-side with lifeguards to effectively treat patients and communicate effectively with dispatch and other first responder agencies.

Those interested should upload their resume at https://www.ocnj.us/employment.
